Now that you have a Bible you can trust, let's answer the most important question: Who is Jesus Christ?

This page presents the biblical evidence systematically, examining what Scripture actually says about Jesus' identity. Each section below presents key passages with analysis. Visit the dedicated page for each section to see the complete collection of verses.

All Scripture quotations are from the Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) unless otherwise noted.

1

Old Testament Prophecies

10 passages written centuries before Jesus' birth that point to a Messiah who would be God Himself

Isaiah 9:6The Child Who Is 'Mighty God'

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

LSB

Why It Matters:

The Hebrew term for 'Mighty God' is El Gibbor — the same title used for Yahweh Himself in Isaiah 10:21. A mere created being cannot be called 'Mighty God' or 'Eternal Father.' This prophecy declares that the coming Messiah would be God incarnate.

NWT Note: The NWT renders this identically, making it difficult for JWs to explain how a created being could bear these divine titles.

Micah 5:2The Ruler Whose Origin Is 'From the Days of Eternity'

But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.

LSB

Why It Matters:

The phrase 'from the days of eternity' indicates the Messiah's eternal pre-existence. Only God is eternal. This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus' birth in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1-6).

Zechariah 12:10Yahweh Says 'They Will Look on Me Whom They Have Pierced'

And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him...

LSB

Why It Matters:

Yahweh Himself is speaking ('I will pour out... they will look on Me'), yet He says He will be pierced. John 19:37 applies this prophecy directly to Jesus' crucifixion. Yahweh was pierced at His death.

2

Direct Statements That Jesus Is God

11 New Testament passages that explicitly identify Jesus as God

John 1:1The Word Was God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

LSB

Why It Matters:

The Greek clearly states 'the Word was God' — not 'a god.' The absence of the article before theos indicates the Word's nature or essence. John is stating that the Word (Jesus) possessed the nature of God while being personally distinct from the Father.

NWT Note: The NWT renders this 'the Word was a god,' creating polytheism and contradicting Isaiah 43:10 and 44:6.

John 20:28Thomas's Declaration: 'My Lord and My God!'

Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God!'

LSB

Why It Matters:

Thomas directly addresses Jesus as 'my God' (Greek: ho theos mou). This is not an exclamation of surprise but a confession of faith — note 'said to Him.' Jesus does not correct Thomas; instead, He affirms his faith. The Greek includes the definite article, making this an unambiguous declaration of Jesus' full deity.

Titus 2:13Our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ

...looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

LSB

Why It Matters:

Greek grammar (Granville Sharp's Rule) requires that 'God' and 'Savior' refer to the same person when connected by 'and' under one article. Paul explicitly calls Jesus 'our great God and Savior.'

3

Jesus' Claims to Equality with God

8 passages recording Jesus making claims that only God could rightfully make

John 8:58'Before Abraham Was, I Am'

Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

Jesus uses the present tense 'I am' (ego eimi) rather than 'I was,' echoing God's self-revelation in Exodus 3:14. The Jews understood this as a claim to deity — that's why they picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy.

NWT Note: The NWT renders this 'I have been' to obscure the connection to Exodus 3:14, but the Greek is clearly present tense.

John 10:30'I and the Father Are One'

I and the Father are one.

LSB

Why It Matters:

The Jews understood this as a claim to deity and attempted to stone Jesus for 'blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God' (v. 33). Jesus did not correct their understanding.

John 5:18Making Himself Equal with God

For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

LSB

Why It Matters:

The Jews correctly understood Jesus' claim to be making Himself 'equal with God.' Jesus did not deny their understanding; He went on to expand on His equality with the Father.

4

Jesus as Creator

4 passages showing that Scripture reserves the work of creation for God alone, yet consistently attributes it to Jesus

John 1:3All Things Came Into Being Through Him

All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

LSB

Why It Matters:

'All things' without exception were created through Christ. If all created things came through Him, then He Himself cannot be a created thing. 'Apart from Him nothing came into being' — this is absolute and allows no exceptions.

Colossians 1:16-17By Him All Things Were Created

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

LSB

Why It Matters:

All things in heaven and on earth — including angelic thrones and dominions — were created by Him, through Him, and for Him. If Jesus created all angelic beings, He cannot Himself be an angel.

NWT Note: The NWT inserts '[other]' four times in this passage. This word does not appear in the Greek text.

5

Jesus Receives Worship

9 passages showing that God alone is to be worshiped, yet Jesus accepts worship

Hebrews 1:6Let All the Angels of God Worship Him

And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, 'AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

God the Father commands all angels to worship the Son. Angels are not to be worshiped (Revelation 19:10), and angels do not worship other angels. If angels worship Jesus, Jesus must be God.

NWT Note: Earlier NWT editions used 'worship' here; later editions changed it to 'do obeisance' to obscure Jesus' deity.

Acts 7:59-60Stephen Prayed to Jesus

They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!' Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them!'

LSB

Why It Matters:

Stephen prayed to Jesus as he was dying. He 'called on' (Greek: epikaloumenon) the Lord — the same word used for calling on God in prayer. Prayer is an act of worship directed to God alone.

Revelation 5:13-14Worship to the Lamb

And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, 'To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

The Lamb (Jesus) receives the same worship as the Father. All creation worships both equally. Note: 'every created thing' worships — Jesus is not among the created things.

6

Jesus Has Divine Attributes

8 passages showing that only God possesses these attributes, yet Scripture ascribes them to Jesus

Matthew 28:20Omnipresence

...and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

LSB

Why It Matters:

Jesus promises to be with all believers everywhere, always. Only an omnipresent Being can make this promise.

John 21:17Omniscience

He said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?' Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, 'Do you love Me?' And he said to Him, 'Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

Peter affirms that Jesus 'knows all things.' Only God is omniscient.

Hebrews 13:8Immutability

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

LSB

Why It Matters:

Unchangeableness is a divine attribute (Malachi 3:6). Jesus, unlike created beings, does not change.

7

Jesus Does What Only God Can Do

5 passages showing Jesus performing acts that only God can perform

Mark 2:5-7Jesus Forgives Sins

And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.' But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 'Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?'

LSB

Why It Matters:

The scribes were correct: only God can forgive sins against God. Jesus demonstrated His authority to forgive by healing the paralytic, thus proving His deity.

John 5:21Jesus Gives Life

For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

LSB

Why It Matters:

Giving life is God's prerogative. Jesus gives life 'to whom He wishes' — exercising divine sovereignty.

John 10:28Jesus Gives Eternal Life

...and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

LSB

Why It Matters:

Only God can give eternal life. Jesus claims to give it directly.

8

Old Testament Yahweh Passages Applied to Jesus

5 passages where NT authors take passages about Yahweh and apply them to Jesus

Isaiah 40:3 → Matthew 3:3Prepare the Way for Yahweh

A voice is calling, 'Clear the way for Yahweh in the wilderness; make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

All four Gospels apply this passage to John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus. The one whose way John prepared is explicitly identified as 'Yahweh' and 'our God' in the original prophecy. Jesus is Yahweh.

Isaiah 45:23 → Philippians 2:10-11Every Knee Will Bow

I have sworn by Myself... that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.

LSB

Why It Matters:

What Yahweh declared would be done to Him — every knee bowing, every tongue confessing — is applied to Jesus in Philippians. Jesus receives what belongs to Yahweh alone.

Isaiah 6:1-10 → John 12:41Isaiah Saw His Glory

In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted... for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of hosts.

LSB

Why It Matters:

John 12:41 states that Isaiah 'saw His glory' — referring to Jesus. When Isaiah saw Yahweh of hosts high and lifted up, he was seeing the pre-incarnate Christ.

9

Christ's Pre-existence and Activity in the Old Testament

3 passages demonstrating Jesus existed before His incarnation and was active in OT history

1 Corinthians 10:4The Rock Was Christ

...and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.

LSB

Why It Matters:

Paul identifies Christ as the Rock that sustained Israel in the wilderness. Throughout the Old Testament, Yahweh is called 'the Rock.' Paul is identifying Jesus with Yahweh.

Jude 5Jesus Delivered Israel from Egypt

Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

LSB (following earliest manuscripts)

Why It Matters:

The earliest Greek manuscripts read 'Jesus' rather than 'Lord.' Jesus pre-existed and was the divine agent of Israel's salvation in the Exodus.

10

The 'I AM' Statements

5 passages where Jesus' use of 'I AM' echoes God's self-revelation in Exodus 3:14

John 8:24'Unless You Believe That I Am'

Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.

LSB

Why It Matters:

Jesus makes belief in His 'I AM' identity essential for salvation. This echoes the divine name from Exodus 3:14.

John 18:5-6'I Am' and They Fell to the Ground

They answered Him, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said to them, 'I am.' ...So when He said to them, 'I am,' they drew back and fell to the ground.

LSB

Why It Matters:

When Jesus spoke 'I am,' the soldiers and officials fell backward to the ground. This was a supernatural response to the divine name.

11

The Alpha and Omega

3 passages where Jesus claims titles that belong exclusively to Yahweh

Revelation 1:17-18The First and the Last

When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, 'Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

Jesus is 'the first and the last' — the same title Yahweh claims in Isaiah 44:6. 'I was dead and am alive' identifies the speaker as the crucified and risen Christ.

Revelation 22:12-13Alpha and Omega

'Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.'

LSB

Why It Matters:

The speaker is clearly Jesus (v. 16: 'I, Jesus'). Jesus claims titles that belong to Yahweh alone (Isaiah 44:6; 48:12).

Jesus shares titles exclusive to Yahweh — First and Last, Alpha and Omega

The question is not whether the Bible teaches that Jesus is God — it does, abundantly and clearly. The question is whether we will accept this testimony.

Why Does This Matter?

Understanding that Jesus is God isn't just an interesting theological detail—it's essential for salvation.

But why? What difference does it make whether Jesus is God or “a god”?
